The Legacy and Lasting Kindness of President Jimmy Carter
By Emory Morsberger

Jimmy Carter’s life is a testament to the power of kindness, compassion and the unwavering belief in the goodness of humanity. Born and raised in Plains, Georgia, his humble beginnings shaped a life dedicated to hard work, unity and the betterment of all people. More than anything, President Carter’s legacy reminds us that acts of kindness—no matter how small or large—can leave an enduring impact.

Throughout his storied career, from Georgia State Senator to the 39th President of the United States, Carter’s leadership was marked by compassion and a steadfast commitment to doing what was right. As Governor of Georgia, he fought for racial integration and implemented reforms in education and environmental protection. As President, he championed human rights calling for an end to racial injustice, a comprehensive energy policy and the creation of the U.S. Departments of Energy and Education. These accomplishments stemmed from a simple but profound belief: that progress is rooted in understanding and kindness.

Locally, Carter’s spirit of inclusion and generosity is immortalized on Jimmy Carter Boulevard in Gwinnett County. This nine-mile roadway, central to the Gateway85 Community Improvement District, is a bustling hub of opportunity where diverse businesses and communities flourish. Each shop, restaurant and business reflect the values he cherished: hard work, innovation and inclusivity. The boulevard stands as a living tribute to the kindness and vision that defined his life.

June Morsberger and President Jimmy Carter embracingOn a personal note, I’ll never forget a moment that perfectly encapsulates the man President Carter was. I served alongside him on The Carter Center Board of Councilors for 12 years and during one of our quarterly board meetings, I brought my daughter, who was born with Down syndrome, as my special guest. President Carter immediately noticed her in the crowd and, without hesitation, stepped past his security detail to greet her with a warm hug and a gentle kiss on the cheek. Her face lit up with joy, and it remains one of the most treasured memories of our lives. That single act of kindness—simple yet profound—is emblematic of the empathy and humanity that defined his character.

Beyond the borders of Georgia, Carter’s enduring legacy continues through The Carter Center, an institution founded on his lifelong commitment to promote peace, fight disease and advocate for democracy worldwide. Now led by his grandson, Jason Carter, The Center reminds us that even on the world stage, acts of kindness and compassion can spark transformative change.

Jimmy Carter’s 100 years on this earth were a masterclass in leading with love and empathy. Even in his later years, as the longest-living president in U.S. history, he remained a symbol of humility and purpose, inspiring generations to treat one another with dignity and care.

As we reflect on his extraordinary life, let us honor President Carter by embodying the kindness he so effortlessly displayed. Whether through small gestures or grand efforts, his legacy teaches us that we all have the power to make the world a better place—one act of kindness at a time.

We invite you to share your own stories of President Carter and his kindness here. Together, we celebrate a leader whose legacy has been forever woven into the fabric of our nation and our community.
